Stress Physiology

Our brain is constantly assessing our surroundings and is programmed to ask one question - "Am I safe?". This question may be asked either consciously or subconsciously. If at any moment the brain decides you are not safe, it activates the "fight flight stress response". This activates parts of the brain stem which prepare your body to either face the situation e.g. fight or to run away. Situations where this could happen inappropriately include blue flashing lights in the rear view mirror or a small spider or mouse (or any trigger for a phobia). It occurs at any time the brain senses "danger".

The stress response can be summarised as follows:

  • Adrenalin is released (more energy)
  • Blood sugar elevates (more energy)
  • Blood pressure rises (increased oxygen to muscles)
  • Pulse increases (increased oxygen to muscles)
  • Muscles tense (ready for action)
  • Immunity, digestion and sexual function turn off (as not necessary in a survival situation)

These are all appropriate responses if we are in danger, and after the danger has passed they should all return to normal levels and the body return to a state of safety. If however during a stressful event the emotional brain or Limbic system becomes involved it can send a message to the brain stem to maintain the stress response, just incase such a situation ever happens again. Over time this can develop into Defense Posture.

According to the Centre for Disease Control, this is the cause of 95% of all disease and is directly what Network Spinal Analysis (NSA) addresses. Network Spinal Analysis helps people move from stress physiology and defence posture to a state of safety and growth.

If you look at the list of responses in stress physiology, it is immediately apparent that long term these are our most common chronic ailments:

Adrenalin is Released (Anxiety/Depression)
Blood Sugar Elevates (Diabetes)
Blood Pressure Rises (Hypertension)
Pulse Increases (Cardiac Arrhythmia)
Muscles Tense (Fibromyalgia, Neck and Back Pain, etc.)
Immunity turns off (Immune related diseases)
Digestion turns off (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Indigestion)

When the body and brain are locked in stress physiology and defence posture, we react as if the stress that caused it is still occurring, even though it may be decades in our past. In this state, health and healing are impossible, and our quality of life and degree of wellness greatly diminishes. Not only does this affect us physically, it effects us emotionally and mentally as well.

Network Spinal Analysis helps people move from stress physiology and defence posture to a state of safety and growth.
