During pregnancy many physical and chemical changes occur to support the growing foetus. The benefits of care from chiropractic are two-fold.

Firstly to support the mother, ensuring that she is in optimal health, has the energy and adaptability to continue with her daily activities. It is also important that her spine and especially her pelvis are flexible in preparation for child birth. A restricted pelvis can increase the possibility of a complicated birth or c-section.

Secondly, to optimise the internal environment for the baby during gestation. Where restrictions to the mothers pelvis exist this can result in intrauterine constraint, a condition where the baby has reduced space to grow and turn. This condition can result in breech or transverse presentations and also in spinal or cranial dysfunction in the baby who may become “squashed” or restricted. Also, where a mother is stressed and anxious through pregnancy new research is suggesting that this can impact negatively on brain development and can result in a child that is pre-disposed to be anxious and stressed.

Research shows that application of this technique results in the removal of breech/transverse presentation in over 80% of cases, dramatically increasing the likelihood of a simple cephalic presentation and natural birth. Webster technique can be applied throughout pregnancy to optimise the foetal environment or in the latter stages (after 37 weeks) where breech/transverse lie is already diagnosed.
